A fascinating account of an arduous expedition by Frank Alcorta, across Papua New Guinea in 1973/74 at its widest part along the border with Indonesian Papua, then Irian Jaya. This was the first solo expedition across Papua New Guinea. He was motivated by the sheer magnitude of the challenge. Only once before had the entire country been crossed, in 1928 by two Australians, Charles Karius, Assistant Resident Magistrate, and his companion Ivan Champion. Never had the country been crossed by a single explorer. Never from north to south, coast to coast and this without government or private support of any kind. The world has moved on, and there will probably never be another opportunity like this to traverse wild untouched country again.

The author spends a lot of time bragging about what an amazing individual he is and how incredible he was for making this journey. Don't get me wrong - that trek would literally kill most people. Having been born & raised in the mountains where he walked, I feel qualified to state that that is truly an accomplishment! The problem with the book is that instead of relating the wonders he saw and the awesomeness of creation, he spends a large majority of the text talking about how much smarter, stronger and braver he is than anyone else - Administrators, missionaries, New Guineans - he's a hero in his own words. Add to that his premise that by walking as fast as possible through dense jungle he'll be able to "study" the migration patterns of humanity, and even claims to have arrived at a meaningful conclusion. My own mother spent 20+ years with a single clan of a single language group studying their culture and doesn't claim to be anything remotely like an expert anthropologist. Which leads back to the reason I give it 1 star; this book is dedicated by the author to himself and his own ego. It could have been an educational, meaningful account of the journey but instead is a continual tale of self-serving arrogance. Massively disappointed.

The author did have to rely much on old notes and memory. PNG is a harsh and unyielding country and still has unknown areas with habitants unknown. It is unpredictable. A great read and in simple words for those who are interested in PNG. Don't try this at home kids! It is a serious journey and how he survived on a shoestring is a miracle. Good read and I enjoyed it. Places I know and events I can relate to.
It takes a brave man to undertake the journey(s) described by the Author. Frank is lucky to have survived the threats found in the Jungle (Disease, snakes, alligators, raging rivers, contrast in temperature, rugged landscape, lack of western food) and the low value placed on human life by the indigeous peoples. Papua New Guinea is a "Wild place". But this man achieves his mission and I salute him for doing so. An interesting read about a place I will never explore.
Excellent read for content; an amazing journey by an intrepid adventurer with a zest for life in all its facets.
A gutsy trip through a hostile environment very few had crossed, not even the natives, with no support team except for a few natives to help carry the meagre provisions which represented mere sustenance. Despite deprivations of any luxury, either in camping or provisions, the author took it all in his stride; a courageous traveler indeed.
The trek would make an excellent docudrama, if there was a photographic team game enough to take it on. Well done!
