First Lensman Edward Elmer Smith 9783942961363 Books Reviews
This book covers the establishment of the Galactic Patrol as well as the origin of the "lens", with its almost magical properties. The Lensmen series was written in the 1950s and has what seems today an almost naive belief in the goodness of those in power. Members of the Galactic Patrol are all honest, forthright, upstanding, true as a die individuals who know what is best for everyone else in the galaxy. Those who disagree get blasted! Entire space fleets of "pirates" are simply vaporized, with no attempt to take prisoners or offer terms for surrender. That said, the book is well written and the author has several clever and thought-provoking ideas about the future.
This book rather than Triplanetary (the 1st in the series ) is so amazingly deep, captivating, and will not disappoint. It does get a bit wordy at times, but this epic story of the Lens and the origins of the fledgling Galactic Patrol the mysterious Arisians and their gift of the Lens to a human race struggling for survival against an enemy that has the active support of a race of mentally powerful beings similar to the benevolent Arisians sets the stage for dramatic thriller space warfare with weapons and technology unlike any found in other author's novels. Coupled with strategy and political in fighting so complex and fascinating will grab you and not let go even when you have finished reading it. You want more and lots of it.
What is even more remarkable is the authors creative genius. I cannot conceive of of a mind capable of writing such a brilliant and immensely entertaining novel. Wow.
This is not a review of the story, but of the rendition which absolutely blows.
I cannot believe that the ePublisher did more than scan it in. There can't possibly have been any proof-reading of the resulting text. There are multiple errors on almost every page. I've been a fan of this series for decades and was deeply, deeply disappointed to find such a seminal science-fiction classic so badly disrespected.
One of the very best space operas ever written in the science fiction genre. No science fiction library should be without the entire series as it provides a fan with a reference to the basis for what has come to be known as the golden age of science fiction. Adventure and romance, with just the right touch of science, that fired the imagination of a generation of science fiction fans. While many advances in real life science are not touched on in these books enough of the stories basic far flung imagination makes the transition that they can still excite and entertain even the most discriminating science fiction fan of today. Epic scale good verses evil battles drive the story lines in every book in the series. Larger than life characters fill the pages. Of course the reader must deal with the biases that reflect the time period and attitudes common to the period in which the author wrote, but does not detract from the overall experience of reading what is unquestionably one of the masterpieces of science fiction. Buy the book, and the rest of the series, for the experience of getting to know what formed the foundation of the science fiction genre. Enjoy this book and the rest in the series for the pure pleasure of doing so. Times change, attitudes and beliefs and biases change, but great storytelling will always remain great storytelling.
Another installment in Doc Smith's Lensman series. This edition has been proofread and the formatting reviewed. Despite (because of?) Smith's somewhat archaic use of language, the Lensman series is a must-read for all serious fans of science fiction. He invented faster-than-light travel, and did it in a manner that is consistent with relativity. [If you render a ship inertia-less, achieving any speed is instantaneous. He also conserved momentum.] The characters are bigger than life, as are the situations. Each volume is prefaced with "the story so far", a summary of the history of the Universe since its inception.
