Detective Grace McKenna’s mother has always told her that she has a gift. When she looks into a criminal’s eyes she can see haunting images of victims who have been wronged. One of those visions is the face of Jenny Silva, high school art teacher who has gone missing from the small town of Bridgeton, Massachusetts, where Grace works. When she makes eye contact with the possible suspect, Jenny's tortured face flashes before Grace, leaving an unsettling imprint on her. Grace finds herself making tough decisions to solve a case on her own, where she stumbles across town secrets and gets mixed up in an unlikely love affair. Sometimes a wrong can find a way to be righted all on its own.

I read the reviews before purchasing this book. Some of the negatives did give me concern, but I decided to try it anyway. I do agree that the main character did act like she was a lot younger than she was, but I attributed it to her being more sheltered in her youth because of the gift. I really thought it was a very interesting story line. It may have been slow in parts with a lot of descriptive scenery but not enough to hurt the story. It had a great ending, and I was disappointed to see it end and that, while it did leave a door open for a sequel, there was not one. I enjoyed the book and recommend it.Product details

The Gift Kate Anslinger 9781541291218 Books Reviews
Enjoyed this book...kept my interest all the way through.
I couldn't put this book down. It was so good and I loved the characters. I really hope this author write more books with Grace and her friends.
Editing needed. Lots of typos but the big issue that bugged me the most was Grace driving to work in the fall with the leaves colorful and suddenly it was winter - yet no time had lapsed.
The story was a good one with character depth. I hope that someone edits it carefully.
Once I picked this novel up I couldn't put it down! There were several times I thought I knew what might happen and then the book took a twist that left me thrilled! I am hoping that I will hear more from this author and see what cases Detective Grace McKenna gets into next!
Based on the interesting and imaginative premise, that one can possess a "gift" of being able to "read" an individual's history of violence by gazing into his eyes.... This book takes the reader on a topsy-turvy ride as the protagonist forces herself to deal with the effects of her discoveries and to face her moral responsibility to take action against the perpertrators that she uncovers. Enjoyable read.
I read another one of Kate's books and was so excited to try out her new one "The Gift." It was so great. From the first page to the last I couldn't put this book down.
I am a big Paranormal reader and this was just what I was looking for. Grace seemed so real to me and the small town she worked in was almost a character itself.
I loved the twists and turns and hope she will write another book with Grace and her gift!
A lady police detective with a very unusual ability is the focus of THE GIFT by Kate Anslinger. It is extremely intriguing from the preface forward. Detective Grace McKenna looks into a person's eyes, and if they are a criminal, "she can see haunting images of victims who have been wronged." I was concerned when I began reading that it was a paranormal tale (which I avoid), so I researched the phenomenon mentioned, and it is in fact a rather legitimate, albeit rare, condition. So... I read on and really enjoyed the book very much. I read quite a while before it dawned on me that the female on the cover is not Detective Grace but rather the antagonist in the story. It is well written with lots of curve balls. By way of warning, there is a sprinkling of profanity but just a sprinkling. I give it five stars.
